God & Bigotry

On Wednesday, September 21, the UNCG Women's and Gender Studies Department will be screening the film, "One Nation, Under God" from 7:00pm to 9:00pm (Petty 136, UNCG).  "Focusing on the contemporary religious Right Wing proliferation of curative therapies for homosexuality, this riveting documentary offers historical context as well as a political analysis of this frighteningly large movement."  Dr. Sarah Cervenak and Dr. Danielle Bouchard will be leading a post-viewing discussion.

Although this documentary was made in 1993, the subject is unfortunately as relevant as ever: "North Carolina will put an amendment banning same-sex marriage on the ballot in May after the state's House and Senate passed the measure. If the constitutional amendment is approved by voters during the primary in May, North Carolina would become the final state in the Southeast to add a constitutional amendment regarding same-sex marriage... North Carolina currently has a ban on same-sex marriage, but legislators are seeking to protect that ban by chiseling it into their constitution."

We ignore the adoration and propagation of hate-filled lunacy at the peril of our own civil liberties. Faith is not a virtue. Let's be reasonable.
